Government releases guidelines for OTT platforms and social media

Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar on Thursday announced the guidelines for the over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

Here are the key takeaways:

1. Prasad said that the grievances should be addressed as early as possible. Under the new policy, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter would have to remove the flagged content as soon as possible, but not later than 36 hours, after a government or legal order.

2. The social media platforms will now have to disclose the first originator of the message or tweet if the authority of the court order dictates, said Ravi Shankar.

3. The social media platforms will require to appoint a grievance officer. They will work in coordination with the authorities to resolve issues.

4. The laws will come into effect within three months, he added.
