Underwater Tunnel will be constructed in Brahmaputra

The government of India has given approval to construct a 4-lane tunnel under the Brahmaputra river that will link Gohpur and Numaligarh. This will be first of its kind being constructed in India and it is reported that it will be longer than China’s tunnel below the Taihu Lake in Jiangsu province.

The new tunnel is expected to be a helping hand in transporting military supplies and ammunition as trucks will be able to speed up across the tunnel at 80 km/per hour. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHAIDCL) has signed in America’s Louis Berger company for the project and the Centre has also given approval.

The tunnel will also have a ventilation system, footpath, fire-fighting mechanism, drainage system, emergency exit, etc will be there according to reports, and it will also be equipped with crash barriers. The tunnel construction will boost the connectivity between Assam & Arunachal Pradesh.
