US Declares Monkeypox As Public Health Emergency

Guwahati: The epidemic of monkeypox was deemed a public health emergency by the USA on Thursday. The nation has so far reported more cases of the virus than any other nation on earth.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra made the announcement at a briefing with the top public health officials.

He declared, “We’re ready to step up our reaction to combat this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously and shoulder duty to support us in combating this illness.”

“This public health emergency will allow us to explore additional tactics to get vaccines and treatments out to the affected areas more quickly,” said Robert Fenton, the recently designated White House national monkeypox response coordinator, in the briefing. And it will enable us to gather more information from the relevant authorities so we can follow and combat this outbreak more successfully.

Health professionals and activists pressed President Joe Biden to take appropriate action to stop the monkeypox outbreak because it has affected more than 6,600 people in the United States.

The public health emergency declaration, according to health law expert Lawrence O Gostin, was “a significant turning point in the monkeypox response, after a mediocre start.”

The announcement, according to officials, may enable the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to deploy more personnel to address the epidemic and, concurrently, share more information to follow the monkeypox cases. Increasing immunisation rates will also be beneficial.

Since last week, the administration claimed to have given states and territories 266,000 doses of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine.

Monkeypox was previously classified as a “public health emergency of worldwide significance” by the World Health Organization (WHO) in July.
