1000 Bru Militants to Surrender Arms In Assam
Guwahati: Around 1000 Bru militants will lay down their weapons and rejoin society at a formal ceremony on December 12 in the Hailakandi district of Assam.
This was informed by the police on Thursday.
Members of the United Democratic Liberation Front of Barak Valley (UDLFBV) and Bru Revolutionary Army of Union (BRAU), who are currently on a ceasefire, will formally lay down their arms at Katlicherra, 28 km from here along the state border with Mizoram, Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Nabaneet Mahanta said as reported by PTI.
Speaker of the Assam Assembly Biswajit Daimary and Minister of Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Pijush Hazarika would both be present at the event.
The superintendents of police for the districts of Hailakandi, Cachar, and Karimganj have been asked to show the arms during the official ceremony.
The Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF), the state governments of Mizoram and Tripura, and the Center had inked an agreement in 2018 for the repatriation of Bru families and had started negotiations with the organisations to return to the mainstream, the report said.
Both militant groups are alleged to have been involved in the murder of BJP leader Pratul Deb, who had retired to India from London, as well as cases of extortion, kidnappings, and other illegal activities during the 1990s along the Assam-Mizoram border regions, particularly in the Hailakandi district, according to the police.
