10,000 Yaba Tablets Seized in Cachar as Assam Intensifies War on Drugs

Guwahati: In a significant blow to drug trafficking networks in Assam, police in Cachar district seized 10,000 yaba tablets worth an estimated Rs 3 crore during an anti-narcotics operation in the Sildubi area. The raid, conducted on Wednesday, resulted in the arrest of one individual suspected of peddling the illegal methamphetamine-based tablets.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the successful operation through an official statement, applauding law enforcement for their continued efforts in combating the drug menace. The tablets, known for their potent and addictive properties, are banned under Indian law and classified as a Schedule II controlled substance.

This latest bust is part of a broader crackdown by Assam Police, who have stepped up operations in key transit and border zones. Just a day earlier, another case was reported in Dhubri district where 120 yaba tablets were recovered from a woman named Sofiya Khatun in Koimari Part IV. The 35-year-old, wife of Matiar Rahman, was apprehended by Golakganj police late Tuesday night and remains in custody.

Officials indicate that the arrests underscore growing concern over the spread of synthetic drugs in border areas, particularly in regions vulnerable to cross-border smuggling routes. Authorities have launched investigations to trace the supply chain and identify possible connections to larger drug syndicates operating in the Northeast.

With Assam emerging as a critical corridor for narcotics trafficking, state agencies have pledged to intensify operations and enhance surveillance to root out drug networks. The recent seizures reflect a zero-tolerance policy aimed at protecting communities from the devastating impacts of synthetic drugs.
