11 Candidates Cleared for Assam’s Samaguri By-Poll; 3 Nominations Rejected Amid Scrutiny
Guwahati – Following a close scrutiny process, nomination papers of 11 out of 14 candidates vying for Assam’s Samaguri assembly seat were accepted on Tuesday, while three submissions were rejected, according to an official release.
This marks a key step forward as the state readies for upcoming by-polls across five vacant constituencies next month.
The Samaguri constituency, which saw scrutiny delayed on Monday due to discrepancies in the documents of two independent candidates, completed its review earlier today. “Of the 14 candidates who submitted nomination papers, 11 have passed scrutiny while three were disqualified,” the statement read.
The by-polls in Assam cover Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri seats, which fell vacant after sitting representatives won in the recent Lok Sabha elections. In total, 38 candidates registered their nominations across these constituencies before last Friday’s deadline. In addition to Samaguri’s 14 hopefuls, Dholai received nine nominations, Sidli three, Bongaigaon eight, and Behali four.
Unlike Samaguri, candidates in the other four constituencies encountered no issues during scrutiny, and all 24 candidates were approved on Monday.
Candidates have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations. Polling across all five constituencies is scheduled for November 13, with vote counting slated for November 23.
