127 Dead After Clashes Erupt During Football Match in Indonesia
Guwahati: At least 127 people died after riots broke out during a football game in Indonesia on Saturday night. Among the dead are police officers and children.
The soccer game was played within the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, an island city in Indonesia’s East Java region. The defeat of Arema Football club by their arch-rivals Persebaya on their home ground prompted a large number of their supporters to storm the pitch following which mass riots broke out, killing more than 100 football fans and two police officers on the scene, the Daily Star reported.
Several videos that went viral on social media showed spectators scaling fences as they attempted to flee the smoke after tear gas was fired at the scene of the event to disperse the crowd.
Notably, the Daily Star reported that the stampede persisted in the streets after the mayhem on the soccer field subsided.
