130 students from Assam stranded in flood-hit Sikkim, evacuated

Guwahati, 9th October: Students from Assam who were stranded in the flood-affected region of Sikkim have been successfully rescued and repatriated to their home state.

The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) deployed six buses to facilitate their return to Guwahati, with a significant number of these students reportedly attending Sikkim Manipal University.

Earlier today, the Assam Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that Assam Government officials had traveled to Sikkim to oversee the safe return of these students.

On October 6, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the dispatch of two senior officers to coordinate the evacuation efforts for approximately 160 stranded students in Rongpo and Majitar areas of Sikkim.

Taking to platform X, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Due to the situation in Sikkim, we have dispatched two senior officers to oversee the evacuation of our 160 students from Rongpo and Majitar as soon as possible.”

Assam’s Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, warmly welcomed the rescued students from Sikkim in the early hours of the morning. A state government-led rescue operation successfully evacuated around 130 students, with the Chief Minister himself closely monitoring the entire mission.
