15 ‘Crorepati’ Candidates Identified in Assam’s Third Phase Lok Sabha Elections

Guwahati, 5th May: In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam’s third phase, a noteworthy revelation has emerged from the affidavits filed by the candidates. Out of the 47 contesting candidates across four constituencies, a total of 15 have been identified as ‘crorepatis’, signaling a significant presence of wealth in the political arena.

The wealthiest among them is AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, vying for the Dhubri seat, with declared assets amounting to a staggering Rs 155 crore. Following closely is independent candidate Dulu Ahmed from Barpeta, with assets worth Rs 63 crore. The spectrum of ‘crorepati’ candidates spans across various political parties, including Congress, AGP, BJP, AIUDF, Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF), United People’s Party, Liberal (UPPL), Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), and Ekam Sanatan Bharat, along with four independents. This diverse representation highlights the financial diversity within Assam’s political landscape.

However, it’s not just wealth that’s under scrutiny; liabilities also play a significant role. Among the candidates, independent contestant Dulu Ahmed holds the highest liabilities at Rs 11.86 crore, followed by BPF’s Kampa Borgoyary and Congress’s Rakibul Hussain.

The Lok Sabha constituencies of Barpeta and Guwahati each boast five ‘crorepati’ candidates, while Dhubri and Kokrajhar (ST) have three and two respectively.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, they are confronted with a complex electoral landscape where various factors, including candidates’ financial standings, come into play in the decision-making process.
