1700 Crore Under Construction Bridge Across Ganga Collapsed in Bihar

National Desk, 5 June: A bridge being constructed on river Ganga collapsed while under construction. Under the Bihar government’s ambitious project of connecting north Bihar with south Bihar, the bridge being constructed between Aguwani and Sultanganj collapsed in the river on Sunday .The horrific incident took place around 6.15pm on Sunday.

According to reports, Aguwani Sultanaj Ganga bridge is under construction at Khagdia in Bihar’s Bhagalpur at a cost of over Rs 1,700 crore. Parts of the bridge, up to 192 metres collapsed in the river and sank. Fortunately, the laborers were working around 500 metres away at the time of the horrific accident. Videos of the incident have already gone viral.

Notably, this is not new in Bihar earlier a bridge collapsed while under construction. In December 2022, a portion of the bridge constructed in the Burhi Gandak river in Bihar’s Begusarai had collapsed. Poles 2 and 3 of the bridge collapsed after a crack in the middle of the bridge. A month before that, in November a labour was killed and another worker was injured when a under construction bridge collapsed in Nalanda, the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

According to reports, divisional authorities were shocked after knowing about the horrific incident and the executive engineer of Bihar state bridge construction corporation rushed to the spot.

Reportedly, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has sought details of the incident from Pratyay Amrit, the additional chief secretary of the road construction department. And ordered a detailed inquiry into the collapse of the super structure of the bridge and to identify the culprits.

The news spread like fire all around soon after the incident took place. The Parbatta MLA has demanded a high-level probe into the matter. He said the quality of construction work was not good. And Sultanganj Aguani bridge has been included in chief minister Nitish Kumar’s dream project.
