27-Year-Old Man in Assam’s Siddeshwar Village Dies by Suicide Amid Online Gambling Crisis
Assam: A heart-wrenching incident occurred in Siddeshwar village, Katigara, where 27-year-old Biswajit Malakar, the son of Chowringhee Bazaar businessman Badal Malakar, took his own life on Sunday evening. Authorities suspect the suicide was driven by Biswajit’s struggles with online gambling addiction, which had plunged him into a severe financial crisis.
Biswajit had reportedly lost ₹12 lakh in the past few days due to gambling. His body was discovered at home with a chip around his neck. Local sources revealed that this was not the first time Biswajit had attempted suicide—he had made two prior attempts but was rescued by his family. Tragically, this time they were unable to save him.
The Katigara police were alerted and recovered the body, which has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. Initial investigations indicate that mounting stress from gambling debts was the primary factor behind the suicide.
The tragic incident has left the local community in shock and raised alarms about the growing prevalence of online gambling addiction in the region. Biswajit’s untimely death has sparked calls for urgent awareness campaigns and stronger measures to combat the harmful effects of gambling addiction.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the need for families, authorities, and communities to address this rising issue before more lives are lost.
