29th Anti-Terrorism Day Observed in BTR, Homage Paid to Slain ABSU Leader

Chirang, BTR: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) observed a sombre 29th Anti-Terrorism Day on Tuesday, gathering at Goybari near Basugaon in Chirang district to remember its former president, Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary, who was tragically assassinated by extremists on this very day in 1996. The event served as a powerful reminder of the enduring fight against violence and the pursuit of peace in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The day’s proceedings commenced with ABSU President Dipen Boro lowering the union flag to half-mast, a poignant gesture honouring the fallen leader. The central programme unfolded at the martyr’s memorial, where Bhanumati Basumatary, the late president’s wife, led an emotional tribute, offering flowers and lighting candles in homage to his unwavering legacy and ultimate sacrifice.

Hundreds of ABSU members, students, and representatives from civil society joined the solemn occasion. The air was filled with a collective resolve as participants formed a human chain, engaged in a mass signature campaign, and released white doves and balloons – potent symbols of peace, unity, and the region’s steadfast commitment to combating terrorism.

The gathering took a moment to reflect on the brutal assassination of Swmbla Basumatary, who was gunned down by armed extremists in Hatimatha village, Kokrajhar, while serving as ABSU’s central president. His untimely demise continues to resonate as a stark reminder of the immense challenges faced by democratic and student-led movements striving for progress in the region.

Several prominent personalities graced the programme, including BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, Assam Cabinet Minister UG Brahma, Kokrajhar East MLA Lawrence Islary, ABSU General Secretary Khanindra Basumatary, and members of the BTC Executive Council, underscoring the significance of the commemoration.

Addressing the assembled crowd, Minister UG Brahma delivered a compelling address, advocating for a renewed dedication to peace and non-violence. He passionately urged the youth to uphold democratic values and resolutely resist all forms of extremism. “Terrorism must never be allowed to overpower peace and progress,” he asserted. “We must carry forward the legacy of leaders like Swmbla Basumatary, who stood for justice and unity.”

The event culminated with a collective pledge by all present to continue the fight against terrorism and tirelessly promote harmony within society, reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful future.
