3 Arrested in Connection to Setting up of ‘Miya Museum’

Guwahati: Police announced on Wednesday that three people, including the president and general secretary of the Assam Miya Parishad, had been detained for their purported connections to terrorist organisations.

This move follows the Tuesday sealing of the contentious “Miya Museum,” which had been housed in a PMAY-allotted home in Assam’s Goalpara district.

The president of the Miya Parishad M Mohar Ali was picked up from the museum at Dapkabhita in Goalpara district when he was sitting on a dharna, while its general secretary Abdul Baten Sheikh was taken into custody from his residence in Alamganj of Dhubri district on Tuesday night, police said as per a report of PTI.

They claimed that Tanu Dhadumia, who had inaugurated the museum on Sunday, had been taken into custody while leaving his home in the Dibrugarh village of Kawamari.

According to a senior police officer, the group has been brought to Nalbari in connection with a case filed at the Ghograpar police station under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for investigation and questioning regarding their alleged affiliation with Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarul Bangla Team (ABT).

On Tuesday, a group of government employees sealed the “Miya Museum” in Dapkabhita and posted a notice stating that they had done so at the deputy commissioner’s request.

The word ‘Miya’ in Assam refers to Bengali-speaking migrants whose origin can be traced to Bangladesh.

Senior BJP leaders requested its immediate shutdown after the opening ceremony on Sunday, while Abdur Rahim Gibran, a member of the party’s Minority Morcha, complained to police over the museum’s location in a PMAY-allocated home.
