3 from Assam nabbed for stealing sports bike

Guwahati: A unit from the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch Unit-2 arrested three Assam scammers who purported to be prospective purchasers on Olx and then decamped with sports bikes after a trial ride.

The culprit was discovered with five motorcycles, two of which were reported stolen at the Khandeshwar and Nerul police stations last month.

The arrested accused identified as Abdul Mujumdar (28), Abdul Lashkar (26) and Hujjarhul Choudhary (26), confessed to defrauding two people in Khandeshwar and Nerul and then escaping with their KTM sport bikes.

Officials reported that the owners of three more recovered bikes are being hunted down.

Officials said they used Olx to contact bike owners and after meeting them, they would ask for a trial ride before fleeing with the bike.

Officials noted that tracking them down was difficult because, in order to target a bike owner, they would buy a cheap phone and a SIM card and then trash them after achieving their purpose.

“Based on CCTV camera surveillance on the streets, we identified three suspects who were the same guys who had robbed bike owners in Nerul and Khandeshwar,” stated an official.

Meanwhile, after being nabbed in police custody the arrested accused confessed to using their bike’s registration number plate on the five stolen bikes and delivering them as goods parcels by rail from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Kamakhya junction in Assam.

Soon after, senior inspector Giridhar Gore and his colleagues contacted officials at the LTT goods package department as well as at Kamakhya junction in Assam, and the five KTM sports bikes valued at Rs 5.50 lakh were recovered, according to officials.
