3 Killed, Several Missing After Blast on Island of Jersey

Guwahati: At least three people have died and a dozen more are still missing following an explosion at an apartment building on the Channel Island on Saturday, CNN reported citing the island’s Chief Minister Kristina Moore.

The local police was informed about the incident just before 4 am (local time).

Emergency services arrived at the scene after the police were notified of the incident, according to States of Jersey Police Chief Robin Smith.

CNN quotes Smith as saying that the fire at the explosion site had been put out by the emergency services.

The three-story structure has “totally fallen,” he declared, calling the scene a “devastating scene.” Furthermore, Robin Smith said that people from a number of flats have been evacuated. Approximately 20 to 30 individuals had been moved to a nearby town hall for shelter, he said.

Smith added that a search and rescue effort has been started for individuals who are missing. A noteworthy island territory off the coast of France’s northwest is called Jersey.

Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine what caused the tragedy. According to the CNN report, the night before the explosion, locals had complained about the smell of gas.
