314 Students Cross into Tripura Amid Bangladeshi Protests

Northeast Desk, 21st July: On July 21, 314 students from India and Nepal crossed into Tripura, seeking refuge from escalating violence in Bangladesh. The students entered through two Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) along the 856 km international border shared by Tripura and Bangladesh.

According to Border Security Force (BSF) officials, by 3 PM on July 21, the students had been processed through ICP Agartala and ICP Srimantapur in Sepahijala District. ICP Agartala welcomed 152 students—86 Indians and 66 Nepalese—while 162 Indian students were admitted through ICP Srimantapur.

The BSF anticipates that more students will arrive in the coming days. Nearly 8,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in medical colleges across Bangladesh, including in Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Dhaka.

Debasish Nandi, Manager of the Land Port Authority of India (LPI), noted that the influx of students began as violence erupted in Bangladesh. “Yesterday, approximately 360 students entered. We are coordinating with the BSF to facilitate their arrival,” Nandi told India Today NE. He also mentioned that transportation and accommodations are being arranged for the students, and the LPI is assisting those with existing flight and train tickets to return to their homes.

As the situation in Bangladesh remains volatile, Tripura authorities are bracing for potential further arrivals and continuing their efforts to provide support and security to the incoming students.
