32-Year-Old Disabled Woman Receives Four-Wheeler License in Kerala

National Desk, 5th December: Jilumol Mariet, a 32-year-old woman born without hands in Idukki, Kerala, makes history as the first woman in Asia without hands to secure a four-wheeler driving license. Despite facing physical challenges, Mariet, a graphic art designer in Kochi, realized her dream with persistent efforts.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan personally hands over the driving license to Mariet in Palakkad, recognizing her remarkable achievement. Overcoming her unique circumstances, Mariet pursued her goal for years, and a Kochi-based startup, Vi Innovations, played a pivotal role by developing a voice commands-based system for her car’s indicators, wipers, and headlamps.

Her journey is supported by the Kerala State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, and Mariet successfully passed the mandatory driving tests, leading to the issuance of her license under the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. This historic accomplishment coincides with the International Day of Disabled Persons, further highlighting the significance of her achievement.
