33rd Sikkim State Veterans & Masters Badminton Championship Concludes with Enthusiastic Participation
Gangtok – The 33rd Sikkim State Veterans & Masters Badminton Championship concluded on a high note today at the Paljor Indoor Stadium, showcasing an inspiring display of skill, dedication, and sportsmanship. Organized by the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS), the tournament brought together seasoned athletes from across the state, competing fiercely in various age categories.
Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, Ms. Kala Rai, MLA and Advisor of the Rural Development Department, lauded the efforts of BAS in fostering a strong sporting culture in Sikkim.
Addressing the gathering, she emphasized the pivotal role of sports in shaping discipline, perseverance, and resilience, urging the youth to embrace athletics as a means of personal and professional growth. She also underscored the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure and opportunities for emerging talent.
Beyond the competitive aspect, Ms. Rai touched upon pressing social issues, highlighting how sports serve as a powerful tool in steering youth away from negative influences such as drug addiction. She stressed the importance of structured athletic programs in promoting mental well-being and building a stronger, healthier community.
BAS President Mr. C Zangpo echoed these sentiments, reaffirming the association’s dedication to nurturing badminton talent in Sikkim. He emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance coaching and training facilities, ensuring that young athletes have the resources needed to excel at higher levels of competition.
The tournament culminated in a grand prize distribution ceremony, where top performers across multiple age categories were recognized for their outstanding achievements. The winners included Mr. LB Rai, Mr. Dhiren Lama, Mr. Bhupal Rai, and Mr. Bhanu Pradhan, among others, who dominated the men’s singles and doubles events in their respective age groups. Mixed doubles categories saw spirited performances from pairs such as Mr. Tshering P. Sherpa & Ms. Basanti Rai and Mr. Bhanu Pradhan & Ms. Tika Chettri, adding to the excitement of the championship.
The closing ceremony witnessed the presence of Arjuna Awardee and International Boxer Mr. Jaslal Pradhan, alongside Mr. Kuber Bhandari, President of the Sikkim Olympic Association, and other distinguished guests. Coaches, participants, and enthusiastic supporters gathered to celebrate the success of the tournament, reinforcing the significance of badminton as a growing sport in Sikkim.
