40 dead, over 450 injured in massive blaze at container depot in Bangladesh’s Chittagong
Guwahati: At least 40 people died and around 450 people have been injured after a horrific fire broke out at a private chemical container warehouse at Sitakunda Upazila in Chittagong of Bangladesh on Saturday night.
The fire broke out at BM Container Depot in the Kadamrasul area of Upazilazila.
The Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Police Outpost Sub-Inspector (SI), Nurul Alam said that as the first inquiry into the incident, the container depot caught fire due to chemicals.
Reportedly, the explosion jolted the neighbourhood and smashed the windows of surrounding homes.
Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense Assistant Director Md Faruk Hossain Sikdar said, “Around 19 firefighting units are working to douse the blaze, and six ambulances are also available on the area.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her condolences for those who died in the disaster. Officials have organised a high-powered investigating group and have given it three days to present a report.
