7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Nepal Triggers Tremors Across Sikkim and North India
Gangtok: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Nepal in the early hours of January 7, sending tremors across parts of Sikkim and several northern Indian states.
The epicenter of the earthquake was identified approximately 201 kilometers from Tadong, Sikkim, as per the National Centre for Seismology, with coordinates recorded at latitude 28.86E and longitude 87.51N.
The earthquake, which occurred around 6:50 am, jolted Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, prompting residents to flee their homes in panic.
Similar reactions were observed in Sikkim, where people reported noticeable shaking, although no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries have emerged from the region. Neighboring areas also experienced the tremors, highlighting the extensive reach of the seismic activity.
In addition to Sikkim, the impact was felt in parts of Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and other regions of North India. Residents in these areas reported strong tremors that caused significant alarm, but no major incidents have been reported so far.
Authorities in both India and Nepal have mobilized emergency response teams to assess potential damage and ensure preparedness in the event of aftershocks.
The earthquake has raised concerns among local communities, although officials have reassured the public that monitoring systems are in place.
While the initial shock caused panic, the absence of immediate reports of casualties or damage has provided some relief. The situation remains under close observation as emergency services stay on high alert across affected regions.
