7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Eastern Tajikistan Bordering China
Guwahati: An earthquake with a 7.3 magnitude struck eastern Tajikistan on February 23 at around 5.37 am, according to the Chinese Earthquake Networks Centre .
According to CENC, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 20.5 kilometres.
The epicentre of the earthquake is expected to be about 67 kilometres from the small mountain town of Murghob in Gorno-Badakhstan, a region that is semi-independent and borders China and Afghanistan.
There was an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.0 and an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6, about 20 minutes after the original earthquake.
Overlooking the sparsely populated region where the earthquake took place are the Pamir Mountains.
