81 HIV cases recorded in Lakhimpur
Guwahati: After reports of multiple Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV cases in Morigaon and Nagaon district, on Monday it was found that at least 81 new HIV cases were detected in Lakhimpur district.
A source stated that in the past few days, the health department detected at least 81 new cases of HIV patients but these ones were different from the patients in Nagaon or Morigaon. The cases in Morigaon or Nagaon were a result of drug usage as well as needle sharing. But, the cases detected in Lakhimpur were related to sexual or physical contact mostly connected to sex workers.
The source said that of the 81 active cases, most were linked with sex workers and the infection was due to intimacy.
The source further stated that as per government records, there are 306 sex workers but unofficial data claims that there are more than a thousand sex workers in the district.
All the infected persons in the district are in a stable condition and further steps to contain the HIV in the district are on.
