Manipur: Nation Mourns BSF Jawan Martyred in J&K Firing

Imphal: A pall of sorrow has descended upon Yairipok Yambem in Imphal East district as the news of BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham’s martyrdom reached his home.

The 25-year-old braveheart succumbed to injuries sustained during cross-border firing in the RS Pura sector of Jammu and Kashmir on May 11, leaving behind a grieving family and a proud nation.

The pain of loss is palpable, yet amidst the tears, a father’s pride shines through. Chingakham Bonibihari Singh, Deepak’s father, voiced his profound sentiments, stating, “We are really proud of his sacrifice. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. I am unable to work due to health problems, and he took full responsibility of supporting us after joining the BSF in April 2021.” His words echo the immense sacrifice made by his son in service to the nation.

The void left by Deepak’s absence is deeply felt by his younger brother, Chingakham Naoba Singh, who shared his heartbreak. “He used to call and ask me how I was doing. He always encouraged me to work hard. Now he’s gone. I’m completely devastated,” he lamented, highlighting the bond they shared and the inspiring role Deepak played in his life. The mother’s grief is inconsolable, her shock and repeated pleas for her son to return painting a poignant picture of a mother’s love and loss.

Recognizing the supreme sacrifice of Constable Deepak Chingakham, the Manipur government has stepped forward to offer support to the bereaved family. An ex gratia of ₹10 lakh has been announced under the Major Laishram Jyotin Singh Ashok Chakra scheme, a testament to the state’s acknowledgment of his valor and the family’s loss.

The final journey of the fallen hero is set to commence as his mortal remains are expected to arrive at Imphal airport today. State authorities and security personnel are preparing to receive the body and pay their last respects to the martyr who laid down his life protecting the nation’s borders. The outpouring of grief and respect underscores the profound impact of Deepak Chingakham’s sacrifice on his family, his community, and the nation as a whole.
