Assam Businessman Nabbed in Morigaon for Alleged Multi-Lakh Fraud in Arunachal Pradesh
Guwahati: In a significant breakthrough, the Sangram Police team from Arunachal Pradesh’s Kurung Kumey district has successfully apprehended Rahman Ali, a businessman hailing from North Lakhimpur in neighboring Assam.
The arrest follows allegations that Ali defrauded several residents of Sangram out of a substantial sum, estimated to be in the lakhs of rupees.
According to reports, Rahman Ali had been operating a business in the Sangram area for approximately nine years. The initial complaint filed against him stated that on June 25, 2023, he formally borrowed Rs 2,60,000 from a local resident identified as Tai Taba.
Subsequently, it is alleged that Ali continued to take additional amounts, totaling around Rs 35 lakhs, from Tai Taba and other individuals in the community. These funds were reportedly solicited under the guise of business investments, with promises of lucrative returns for the investors.
The situation took a dramatic turn on February 24, 2025, when Rahman Ali allegedly absconded from Sangram along with his family and relatives. This sudden departure occurred without any repayment of the borrowed money, leaving the local investors in a state of financial distress.
Consequently, a criminal case was registered against Ali at the Sangram Police Station, bearing Case No. 03/25 under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with cheating and dishonesty.
Following the registration of the case, the Kurung Kumey police launched a determined effort to locate and apprehend the accused. Their persistent investigation led them across state borders, ultimately culminating in the successful tracing of Rahman Ali to Mayong in the Morigaon district of Assam. On May 8, 2025, a dedicated police team executed the arrest operation, bringing Ali into custody.
The operation was spearheaded by ASI Shanti Paleng, who is also the Investigating Officer in the case, and included the efforts of HC(SG) Tenjing Norbu and Ct. Yomli Ninu. Authorities have confirmed that Rahman Ali is currently in police custody, and a thorough investigation into the alleged financial irregularities is now underway to ascertain the full extent of the fraud and to ensure justice for the affected residents of Sangram.
