Meghalaya’s First Government Engineering College Gets AICTE Nod to Launch Core Technical Courses

Shillong: In a landmark development for technical education in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the Shillong Government College of Engineering has received formal approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to begin offering Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses. This marks a crucial step in operationalizing the state’s first government-run engineering college.

Sharing the news on social media, Chief Minister Sangma expressed his enthusiasm: “Thrilled to announce that Shillong Government College of Engineering has received the Letter of Approval from AICTE for launching Civil and Electrical Engineering courses. This marks the establishment of the first government engineering college in Meghalaya.”

The approval by AICTE is expected to significantly boost the state’s capacity to deliver quality technical education locally. Until now, many aspiring engineers from Meghalaya have had to move outside the state in search of better academic opportunities. The launch of these core branches, both vital to the region’s infrastructural development, aims to stem this migration and provide students with high-standard engineering education at home.

The Shillong Government College of Engineering, inaugurated by Chief Minister Sangma on January 16, 2023, in Mawlai Kynton Massar under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), is designed to cater to three major disciplines—Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. Each branch will have an intake capacity of 30 students, offering a focused and high-quality learning environment.

This milestone underscores Meghalaya’s growing emphasis on higher education reform and the government’s commitment to building strong academic institutions that empower local youth with skill-based, employable education.
