Mudslide Blocks Lachung–Yumthang Road, Multiple Routes Affected in North Sikkim
Gangtok: A mudslide has disrupted movement between Lachung and Yumthang in North Sikkim, blocking the road and affecting both local residents and tourists heading towards the popular Zero Point destination. Authorities are currently at the site working to clear the debris. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported so far.
The road disruption comes amid a broader series of blockages across the region, largely due to recent rainfall and unstable terrain. According to the latest updates, the Mangan–Gangtok route via Rakdung-Tintek remains blocked at Namok Khola. The alternative route via Phodong is operational, but access is restricted to specific hours.
Other key road updates include:
• Mangan–Chungthang routes via Toong Naga, Phidang, and Sangkhalang are fully blocked.
• Chungthang–Lachen is inaccessible due to a blockage at Munshithang.
• The Lachen–Thangu–Gurudongmar stretch is open but limited to light vehicles.
• The Chungthang–Lachung route remains clear for travel.
• Lachung to Yumthang and Zero Point is currently open, despite the earlier mudslide—suggesting rapid clearance efforts.
Travelers are urged to monitor official road status updates and avoid restricted areas. Emergency vehicles are exempt from timing and access limitations. The weather continues to remain cloudy, raising concerns about further landslides or disruptions.
