Assam MLA Aminul Islam Detained Under NSA for Allegedly Provocative Speech, CM Sarma Confirms
Guwahati: In a decisive action aimed at preserving public order, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that Aminul Islam, MLA from Dhing, has been placed under preventive detention under Section 3(2) of the National Security Act, 1980.
The detention follows a report submitted by the Superintendent of Police, Nagaon, highlighting Islam’s recent inflammatory remarks during a Panchayat election campaign.
The report alleges that the MLA made provocative statements and later appeared in a widely circulated video in which he claimed, without evidence, that the recent Pahalgam terror attack was a government-orchestrated conspiracy. Authorities say the speech had the potential to incite communal tension and disrupt public peace.
Taking cognizance of the report, the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Nagaon invoked the NSA to detain Islam, citing the need to prevent any escalation of disorder. The government emphasized that the decision was made in the interest of maintaining harmony and national security.
Chief Minister Sarma defended the move, stating unequivocally that Assam will not tolerate attempts to sow communal discord or destabilize the state’s hard-earned peace. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against any individual or group found spreading misinformation or inciting unrest.
