Meghalaya High Court Sets Two-Month Deadline for Shillong Airport Land Acquisition

The High Court of Meghalaya has issued a firm two-month ultimatum to state authorities, demanding the swift completion of land acquisition for the long-stalled expansion of Shillong Airport.

A division bench, presided over by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, conveyed their strong disapproval of the continued delays plaguing the crucial infrastructure project in an order issued on May 15th.

The court unequivocally stated, “What the court mandates is that after observance of all formalities, the land should be handed over by the state to the airport authorities not later than two months from date.”

While the Additional Advocate General informed the court that land acquisition procedures were underway and cabinet approval was anticipated shortly, the bench remained unconvinced by the rate of progress.

In a resolute move to ensure timely execution, the High Court cautioned that it would appoint a Special Officer or Commissioner to oversee land purchases should the state fail to adhere to the stipulated two-month timeframe. The order explicitly stated, “If there is any impediment or difficulty in compliance with this direction, the state will bring it to the notice of this court by an application well within the period of two months.”

Furthermore, the court addressed technical objections raised by the Director General of Civil Aviation concerning potential obstructions in the airport’s flight path, instructing the state government to resolve these issues within the same two-month window.

Simultaneously, the central government has been directed to proceed with the tendering process for the airport’s infrastructure development, ensuring that construction can commence without delay once the land acquisition is finalized.

The High Court has scheduled the case for further review on July 15, 2025, expressing its anticipation that “by 15th July, 2025, this project concerning the Shillong Airport will have made a substantial forward march.”
