Nagaland Child Rights Body Issues Urgent Alert Amid Rising Abuse Cases

DIMAPUR, NAGALAND – The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) has released a strongly worded advisory in response to a concerning surge in reported child abuse incidents across the state. The Commission is imploring communities to exercise heightened vigilance to ensure the safety and security of children.

The advisory makes it unequivocally clear that all forms of child abuse are intolerable and demand immediate reporting to law enforcement agencies, irrespective of the abuser’s connection to the victim. The NSCPCR explicitly cautioned against attempting to resolve such grave matters through mediation or mutual agreement, asserting that such actions only embolden perpetrators and obstruct the course of justice.

Drawing attention to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of 2012, the Commission highlighted the non-bailable nature of child abuse offences, which are legally prohibited from being settled out of court. The NSCPCR passionately appealed to the citizenry to embrace their collective responsibility in safeguarding children, underscoring their vital role as the foundation and future of the nation.

Furthermore, the advisory extended a call to media outlets and social media platforms to adhere to stringent ethical guidelines, particularly concerning the confidentiality of child victims involved in abuse cases.

To facilitate reporting, the Commission provided a list of accessible resources, urging individuals to promptly contact the Child Helpline at 1098, the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), or their nearest police station to lodge a First Information Report (FIR).

The NSCPCR reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to the cause of child protection, assuring the public of its active involvement in monitoring cases and striving for the prompt delivery of justice. The Commission concluded by emphasizing that sustained vigilance is a shared obligation that is indispensable for guaranteeing the safety and welfare of every child in Nagaland.
