Harmeet Singh Appointed Assam’s New DGP, Brings Tech-Focused Vision to State Policing

Guwahati: In a significant development for Assam’s law enforcement landscape, the state government has officially appointed Harmeet Singh, IPS (1992 batch), as the new Director General of Police (DGP).

The announcement, issued by the Home (A) Department, marks Singh’s elevation to the Apex Scale in Level 17 of the Pay Matrix, effective from the day he assumed charge.

Singh succeeds outgoing DGP GP Singh, and his formal appointment signifies a pivotal leadership transition within the Assam Police. Prior to this, Harmeet Singh had been serving as the acting DGP while concurrently holding senior roles as Director General of Civil Defence and Commandant General of Home Guards. He also continues in his position as Director of Fire & Emergency Services, underscoring the breadth of his administrative responsibilities.

Academically, Singh holds a BA (Hons) in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and a Master’s degree in History from Punjab University, Chandigarh. His educational foundation, paired with extensive field experience, has shaped his approach to complex law-and-order challenges, including counter-terrorism, cyber security, radicalization prevention, and emergency response.

Singh is widely regarded for championing technology-led reforms in policing and governance. His initiatives have emphasized citizen engagement, digital transparency, and smart policing strategies, aiming to build public trust and institutional efficiency.

Throughout his decorated career, Singh has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Police Medal for Gallantry, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service, Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak, Antrik Seva Suraksha Padak, Kathin Seva Medal, and the Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak for the North East Region.

With his confirmed appointment, Harmeet Singh is poised to lead Assam’s police force into a new era defined by innovation, accountability, and a renewed focus on public welfare.
