CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Rs 5,000 Aid for Tea Garden Workers on International Tea Day
Guwahati: On the occasion of International Tea Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended warm greetings to the tea garden community and paid tribute to their enduring contribution to the state’s identity, culture, and economy.
Acknowledging the legacy of the tea tribes, who have played a pivotal role in shaping Assam for over two centuries, Sarma used the occasion to reaffirm his government’s commitment to their upliftment.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister wrote, “On #InternationalTeaDay, I extend my best wishes to our tea garden community,” adding, “The tea tribes are an intrinsic part of Assam’s society and have enriched our culture over the last 200 years. Our Government has taken a host of steps to empower and uplift them in the last four years.”
In a notable announcement, Sarma declared a one-time financial aid of ₹5,000 for more than 7 lakh tea garden workers across the state. Calling it a tribute to the 200-year journey of Assam Tea, the Chief Minister described the move as a mark of recognition for the community’s tireless efforts.
He also shared a video outlining various welfare initiatives already implemented for tea garden workers. These include the creation of model schools to improve educational access, deployment of mobile medical units to provide healthcare services in remote plantations, and wage compensation for pregnant tea garden workers — all aimed at improving the quality of life for this crucial workforce.
The Chief Minister’s announcements underscore the state government’s broader focus on inclusive development and the empowerment of historically marginalised communities in Assam.
