Sikkim: Gangtok Gears Up with Massive Clean-Up Ahead of PM’s Golden Jubilee Visit

Gangtok: Gangtok is abuzz with an intensive cleanliness drive, transforming its streets and public spaces in anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival on May 29, a momentous occasion marking Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary.

The collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Urban Development Department (UDD), aims to present a pristine capital for the historic celebration.

The sweeping operation has zeroed in on crucial thoroughfares and high-traffic zones, specifically the stretch from Ganju Lama Dwar to Paljor Stadium, encompassing the vibrant MG Marg area. To ensure comprehensive coverage, the designated zone was meticulously divided into four distinct sectors. Each sector is under the direct supervision of GMC councillors, who are receiving robust support from dedicated officials, staff members, and the diligent Safai Mitras, underscoring a united front in urban sanitation.

MLA Delay Namgyal Barfungpa underscored the pivotal role of citizen participation in maintaining the city’s immaculate state. He emphasized that environmental stewardship transcends governmental responsibilities, asserting that a clean city is a collective achievement and a shared obligation of every resident. This community-centric approach is seen as vital for the sustained success of such initiatives.

GMC Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri and Deputy Mayor Tshering Palden Bhutia lauded the current sanitation drive as more than just a logistical preparation. They framed it as a profound tribute to the Prime Minister’s visionary Swachh Bharat Mission, aligning the local efforts with the national mandate for cleanliness. Furthermore, they articulated the drive as a crucial stride towards cultivating a cleaner, more resilient, and ultimately stronger Sikkim for the future.
