Guwahati: In a horrific incident, an 18-year-old boy lost his one hand due to electrocution while chopping branches of a tree in Jorhat district.

The incident has taken place in Baligaon electrical sub-division under the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) near Sarbaibondha on Jb Road.

The victim has been identified as Ganesh Das.

According to sources, Ganesh Das, who accompanied his father Baikunth Das was cutting branches of a tree near a 33 kV line when he came in contact with a live wire.

Sources further stated that the incident was caused by an error on the part of an executive officer and a contractor in charge of the Baligaon Electric Subdivision line.

The incident occurred when the father-son duo had gone to earn some money to buy Bihu clothes for Ganesh.

Following the incident, Ganesh was admitted to Jorhat Medical College and later referred to Dibrugarh Medical College, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

An employee of the Baligaon Electricity Department handed over Rs 14,000 to the family as seasonal aid, but it seems that the authorities are trying to keep the incident under wraps.

The family, living below the poverty line in Gendhali village, is facing a precarious situation, and Ganesh’s future hangs in the balance.
