Assam: Violent Incident at BN Singh Oil Depot Sparks Widespread Reaction
Guwahati: In a violent incident at the BN Singh oil depot in Duliajan has triggered widespread reactions across the state.
The assault, which occurred on May 17 near the Duliajan Police Station, has raised concerns about law and order in the area. Shankarjyoti Baruah, the former general secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was involved in the attack.
Mintu Saikia, the director of the BN Singh oil depot, addressed a press conference to discuss the incident. He confirmed that the police are investigating the matter and assured that the guilty will be punished. However, Saikia expressed concern that the protests following the incident have taken a communal turn.
The Bir Lachit Sena has made indecent remarks and attempted to portray the issue as an Assamese-Bihari conflict, Saikia said.
He emphasized that his business dealings with individuals from the Bihari community should not be misconstrued as a communal issue, pointing out that Assamese individuals are employed at the oil depot and local youths are working there.
Saikia criticized the Beer Lachit Sena for creating a divisive situation and attempting to politicize the incident. He reiterated that the issue should be addressed based on its merits, rather than being given a communal spin.
