Guwahati Gears Up for Connectivity Boost: CM Sarma Meets Gadkari to Fast-Track Highway Projects

Guwahati: Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, engaged in a crucial dialogue with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on May 24, at the latter’s New Delhi residence. The high-level discussion primarily revolved around the status and acceleration of various ongoing National Highway (NH) projects that are set to significantly enhance surface communication across the state. The meeting underscored the collective commitment to bolstering Assam’s infrastructure network.

Several critical ongoing road projects were deliberated upon, alongside plans for new ventures. A significant highlight of the interaction was Chief Minister Sarma’s expression of gratitude to Union Minister Gadkari for initiating the tender process for the much-anticipated Jorhat-Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra, a project poised to be a game-changer for regional connectivity.

The important meeting saw the presence of key officials including KK Dwivedi, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Assam, and Kavitha Padmanabhan, Resident Commissioner, Assam Bhawan, New Delhi, reflecting the collaborative approach towards the state’s development agenda.

Following the meeting, the Chief Minister’s Office, Assam, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share updates, stating, “HCM Dr. @himantabiswa called upon Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari today in New Delhi.” Another post elaborated, “The discussions focused on ongoing road infrastructure projects in Assam and explored ways to further accelerate connectivity and development across the state,” reaffirming the emphasis on rapid progress.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Sarma had articulated Assam’s ambitious vision at the 10th Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog, themed ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat @2047’, also held in New Delhi. He affirmed that the Assam government, with steadfast support from the Central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is taking resolute measures to transform the dream of ‘Viksit Assam’ into a tangible reality. “The pursuit of a Viksit Assam has long been a cherished aspiration of our people. The Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat presents us with an opportunity to transform that aspiration into reality and reclaim and rejuvenate the rich legacy of a prosperous Assam,” CM Sarma remarked. He further highlighted that guided by the Prime Minister’s vision, the Government of Assam has embarked on a transformative journey, aligning itself with the national goal of making India the second-largest economy. “From exports and innovation to digital infrastructure, from railways to rocket launches, India is scripting a new chapter of progress,” the Chief Minister added in an official statement, painting a vibrant picture of the nation’s and consequently Assam’s, upward trajectory.
