Early Monsoon Onslaught: Assam Braces for Heavy Rainfall as IMD Issues 72-Hour Alert

Guwahati: The skies over Assam are set to open up, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a 72-hour alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts. This cautionary announcement arrives hot on the heels of the Southwest Monsoon’s uncharacteristically early debut, painting a picture of a wetter-than-usual start to the season.

The monsoon, typically a June first arrival, decided to grace Kerala on May 24 this year, marking its earliest entry since 2009. This pre-scheduled appearance has also sent ripples across the Northeast, with parts of Mizoram already feeling the monsoon’s preliminary embrace. The Northern Limit of Monsoon now extends impressively, reaching deep into the Northeastern tapestry, enveloping states like Assam and Nagaland in its embrace.

Closer to home, Guwahati and its surrounding areas are gearing up for a mixed bag of weather. The IMD anticipates partly cloudy skies peppered with occasional spells of rain or thundershowers over the next five days. However, the true downpour is expected to unleash its fury by the weekend, promising a more intense bout of rain and thunderstorms.

Authorities have also cautioned about gusty winds and lightning, a potent combination that could lead to flash flooding and waterlogging, especially in areas already saturated by pre-monsoon showers. With Guwahati’s well-known struggle with artificial flooding, local bodies have already sprung into action, closely monitoring vulnerable zones and prepping emergency services to tackle any disruptions that may arise. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and heed official advisories as the monsoon’s early arrival signals a period of heightened weather activity.
