Tripura: Hopes Soar for Kailashahar Airport Revival as Centre Eyes Feasibility

Agartala: The dormant Kailashahar airport in Tripura’s Unakoti district might soon see new life, as Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu is expected to visit the state, following a recent feasibility inspection by Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials. This development comes as a major boost for the region, with Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury confirming the Centre’s imminent action towards its revival.

Speaking to media, Minister Chowdhury expressed his optimism, stating that the current state government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is committed to enhancing Tripura’s communication infrastructure. He highlighted the significant strides made in roadways, highways, and airways since the BJP government assumed office. The Minister revealed his sustained efforts in advocating for the airport’s restoration, having repeatedly corresponded with and personally met both former and current Union Civil Aviation Ministers to press for the initiation of flight operations from Kailashahar.

Minister Chowdhury further shared that Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is also keenly invested in the matter and has taken up the issue with the Central government. He acknowledged that the revival of the Kailashahar airport has been a recurring topic of discussion in the State Assembly, often raised by opposition parties. He reassured the public that an AAI inspection would precede the Union Civil Aviation Minister’s visit, a promise that was fulfilled yesterday. The Minister articulated his strong belief that the Centre will take appropriate steps at the opportune moment, paving the way for the airport’s much-anticipated operational restart.
