Congress Braces for Grand Welcome as Gaurav Gogoi Prepares to Take Helm of APCC

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee is abuzz with activity as it gears up for the official assumption of charge by its newly appointed President and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, on June 3.

A high-voltage preparatory meeting was convened at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Wednesday, witnessing enthusiastic participation from party stalwarts and ground-level workers, all united in their resolve to extend a rousing welcome to their new leader.

Addressing the media following the crucial huddle, APCC Working President Zakir Hussain Sikdar and General Secretary Bipul Gogoi meticulously laid out the itinerary for Gogoi’s much-anticipated return to Assam from the national capital. The dynamic leader is slated to touch down in Jorhat on May 31, where he will immediately plunge into interactions with local residents and dedicated Congress workers, kick-starting a multi-day outreach tour that promises to crisscross the length and breadth of the state.

Come June 1, Gogoi will make his way to Nazira, where he is scheduled to partake in a significant meeting orchestrated by Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. This leg of his journey will see him engaging directly with grassroots party members and the local populace, ensuring a pulse-check from the very foundation of the party. After an overnight stay in Sivasagar, the caravan will roll towards Nagaon on June 2, traversing through Jorhat and Golaghat. In Nagaon, a bustling schedule awaits him, encompassing meetings with party workers, a public gathering, and crucial organisational discussions aimed at reinvigorating the party’s presence.

The grand culmination of this tour will be on June 3, when the delegation arrives in Guwahati. It is here, at the Manvendra Sharma Complex, that Gaurav Gogoi will formally assume charge as the APCC President. The event is poised to be a major spectacle, with expectations of a massive turnout from senior party leaders and a wide array of party functionaries, signaling a new chapter for the Congress in Assam.

In a compelling video message released on Wednesday, Gogoi extended a fervent appeal to the people of Assam, urging them to unite in the collective endeavor of building a state unshackled from the chains of corruption and fear. He emphatically underscored the imperative of collective effort and seamless cooperation across all communities, envisioning a progressive and truly inclusive future for Assam.

The preparatory meeting itself was a testament to the Congress’s collective strength, drawing in a galaxy of prominent leaders. Among those present were former MPs Ripun Bora, Abdul Khaleque, and Mira Borthakur, alongside Mahila Congress President Rupa Deuri, APCC Vice President Gunakanta Gogoi, and a formidable lineup of MLAs including Rekibuddin Ahmed, Diganta Barman, Shibamani Bora, Nurul Huda, and A.K. The attendance also included key organisational figures such as General Secretary Ramanna Baruah, Youth Congress President Jueer Anam, and a host of Presidents and Secretaries representing various frontal organisations, all demonstrating a unified front ahead of Gogoi’s official takeover.
