Congress Fires Salvo at PM Over ‘Silence’ on China, Pakistan

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh today launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lambasting his government’s perceived “silence” on critical national security matters concerning China and Pakistan. Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of prioritising political theatrics over substantive engagement on pressing geopolitical challenges facing the nation.

Addressing media persons, Ramesh squarely questioned the Prime Minister’s assertion that China had been given a “clean chit” on June 19, 2020. He pointed out that the deepening nexus between Beijing and Islamabad since that date has gone unaddressed by the Prime Minister, who, according to Ramesh, has neither spoken to the nation nor taken Parliament into confidence on the matter.

Ramesh further alleged that the Prime Minister was more invested in “filmy dialogue-baazi” and image-building exercises, citing examples like “politicising Operation Sindhoor” and organising rallies, rather than confronting serious national threats with open debate.

Recalling the Congress party’s consistent calls for accountability on national security, Ramesh highlighted letters sent to the Prime Minister on May 10 by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi. These letters, he stated, had urged for a special parliamentary session to deliberate on sensitive issues such as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and China’s escalating influence in Pakistan.

“We asked for an all-party meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, but only two perfunctory meetings were held by the Defence Minister, where no meaningful discussions took place,” Ramesh asserted. He reiterated the Congress’s desire to revisit the unanimous resolution of February 22, 1994, concerning PoK and terrorism. Given the nuclear status of both India and Pakistan, and China’s increased presence in the region, Ramesh underscored the urgency of projecting a strong, unified message to the world.

The Congress leader lamented the government’s “indifference” to the Opposition’s questions, which he maintained were raised constructively and sensitively. This indifference, he contended, has regrettably stifled any meaningful debate on these critical issues that directly impact India’s security and sovereignty.
