Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Aizawl: One Dead, Two Trapped as Wall Collapses
Aizawl: Mizoram continues to reel under the relentless onslaught of severe weather, with a tragic incident unfolding in Aizawl’s Thuampui locality today as a stone wall collapsed, claiming one life and leaving two others trapped. Rescue teams, battling challenging conditions, have so far recovered two individuals from beneath the debris.
Lalnunmawia, hailing from Tlungvel village, was tragically pronounced dead upon recovery, while Lalfakzuala of Aizawl’s Ramthar locality sustained injuries and is currently undergoing medical treatment. The search operations are intensely focused on locating a third individual still feared to be buried under the rubble.
The catastrophic wall collapse occurred amidst a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department for Mizoram, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The severity of the weather has prompted authorities to order the closure of all schools across the Aizawl District, prioritising safety.
Emergency personnel have been working tirelessly since the incident, navigating through the treacherous conditions to extract the victims. Despite the successful recovery of two individuals, the ongoing operations underscore the perilous ground conditions exacerbated by the incessant rainfall that has pounded the region for days.
Further underscoring the dangers posed by the extreme weather to Mizoram’s undulating terrain, a separate rockfall was reported at the Chanmari Ramhlun road in Aizawl. While officials confirmed no landslides had occurred as of 6 am, they maintain a heightened state of vigilance, acknowledging the inherent instability of the terrain under such relentless precipitation.
