Kangpokpi, Manipur: The air in Kangpokpi district crackled with an unusual tension today as authorities sounded the alarm, issuing a stringent weather advisory following a “red alert” from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The region is now on tenterhooks, bracing for potentially severe weather conditions over the next 48 hours, with residents urged to batten down the hatches.
The IMD’s All India Weather Bulletin, released on May 29, painted a grim picture. It warned of extremely heavy rainfall—exceeding 20 cm in a mere 24 hours—and squally winds howling at speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to a formidable 60 kmph. These fierce conditions are particularly expected to lash isolated parts of neighbouring Tamenglong and Senapati districts, sending ripples of concern across the region.
Kangpokpi itself has been placed under a “Yellow Alert,” effective from 8:30 am on May 30 to 8:30 am on May 31. The district administration has not minced words, warning of likely adverse impacts on daily life and infrastructure.
In a proactive move, Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari has stepped up, urging residents to remain hyper-vigilant and take all necessary precautionary measures. He appealed to the public to meticulously monitor official weather updates and be prepared to shift to safer locations at a moment’s notice should conditions deteriorate.
The advisory detailed a comprehensive list of safety protocols. Residents are strongly advised to stay indoors, ensuring all windows and doors are securely fastened. Unnecessary travel has been strictly discouraged. With lightning a clear and present danger, the public has been sternly cautioned against seeking shelter under trees. Furthermore, folks are urged to unplug all electrical appliances, maintain a safe distance from water bodies, and avoid any contact with metal or conductive objects.
Low-lying and flood-prone areas are to be given a wide berth, especially by those residing in vulnerable or temporary structures. The administration also sounded a grave warning about potential landslides in the hilly terrains, advising residents to keep a keen eye out for early warning signs such as unsettling cracking sounds from trees or any visible ground movement.
Emergency services across the district have been placed on high alert, a clear indication of the seriousness with which the situation is being handled. The District Control Room has also released emergency contact numbers—8132068622 and 7048904268—for immediate assistance.
“We are taking every necessary step to ensure the safety of our people,” DC Chaudhari affirmed, his voice resolute. “But public cooperation is crucial. We urge everyone to follow the safety protocols and stay alert during this critical period.”
As monsoon activity intensifies across the entire Northeast, officials are reiterating that preparedness and timely response will be paramount in minimizing risks to both life and property. The coming hours are set to test the mettle of Kangpokpi, and indeed, the entire region.
