Assam govt declares half-holiday; mark of respect for cremation of former CM Tarun Gogoi
The funeral of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi began in Guwahati on Thursday morning. His last rites will be performed at Navagraha crematorium in Guwahati. The mortal remains of Tarun Gogoi, one of Assam’s tallest political leaders, were taken to his official residence from Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra. After the rituals, the last remains were taken to a church located at Rukminigaon area in the city.
Later, the remains will be taken to the Namghar at Zoo Road, then to Sukreswar temple at Panbazar and then to Ugratara temple near Latasil before cremation. On the other hand, as a mark of respect to the former chief minister of Assam, the state government has declared a half-holiday on Thursday as the last rites of Tarun Gogoi will be performed in Guwahati.
In a notification issued by the General Administration Department of the state government on Wednesday said that – “The state government has declared a half-holiday from 1 pm on the day of cremation tomorrow. During this period, all state government offices, public sector undertakings, corporations, boards and educational institutions will remain closed.”
