Arunachal Battles Monsoon Fury: Red Alert Issued as Floods and Landslides Wreak Havoc

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh is currently in the grip of a severe monsoon crisis, as relentless torrential rains over the past several days have unleashed widespread flooding and triggered numerous landslides across multiple districts. A red alert has been sounded across vast swathes of the state, including Kurung Kumey, East Kameng, Siang, Shi Yomi, Kra Daadi, Lower Subansiri, Upper Subansiri, Namsai, and Lohit, among others. While the damage to infrastructure has been extensive, authorities have confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the deluge.

The picturesque Ziro Valley stands as one of the worst-hit areas, now completely submerged under floodwaters, presenting a grim picture. Agricultural fields and paddy crops, the lifeline of many local communities, have suffered immense damage as rivers and streams overflowed their banks with unprecedented force. The overflow of the Sigin River has particularly impacted Daporijo in Upper Subansiri, where over 80 homes have been inundated, and crucial roads and public facilities lie submerged. Adding to the woes, the landslide-prone NH-13, a vital artery connecting Raga and Daporijo, has also been severely affected, disrupting essential connectivity.

In the twin capital cities of Itanagar and Naharlagun, daily life has come to a grinding halt as floodwaters have inundated roads and low-lying areas. Disgruntled locals are quick to point fingers at what they describe as unplanned urban development, with the newly built Trans-Arunachal Highway being particularly singled out for aggravating the crisis. Blocked traditional drainage systems and unscientific landfills, they argue, have further exacerbated the already dire situation.

Further reports from Changlang’s Magantong area indicate a precarious situation, with a concrete bridge over the Buri Dihing River reportedly at risk of collapse due to dangerously rising water levels. Meanwhile, in Tezu, Lohit district, warnings of further heavy rainfall have been issued, keeping authorities on high alert. Despite repeated warnings, a worrying trend continues as authorities plead with residents to avoid risky behaviour, such as fishing in flooded areas like Machawara Camp, especially with children, underscoring the challenges faced by emergency responders.

In response to the escalating crisis, emergency measures have been swiftly put in place. Deputy Commissioners across several affected districts have issued prohibitory orders, advising residents in vulnerable zones to immediately move to safer areas. All relevant departments, including the police, disaster response teams, and civil supplies, have been placed on high alert, working round-the-clock to manage the unfolding disaster.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has painted a grim picture for the coming days, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extreme events over Arunachal Pradesh until at least May 31, 2025. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected to lash the state. This extended monsoon spell, according to the IMD, is associated with a Low-Pressure System lingering over Northeast India, contributing to the relentless downpour.

Adding to the concerns, the IMD has also issued a Multi-Hazard Warning for the state, highlighting the severity of the situation. The regional impact of Arunachal’s incessant rainfall is already being felt across Northeast India, with the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries swelling significantly in neighbouring Assam. While the IMD anticipates a marginal reduction in rainfall intensity in the coming days, above-normal showers are expected to persist due to the advancing southwest monsoon, indicating a prolonged period of vigilance.

Relief operations are currently underway, with authorities closely monitoring the fluid situation. The government has issued an urgent appeal to the public to remain vigilant, strictly adhere to official advisories, and cooperate fully with emergency services to mitigate any potential loss of life and property. The coming days will be crucial as Arunachal Pradesh continues its battle against the formidable forces of the monsoon.
