A relentless downpour has unleashed a series of devastating landslides across Guwahati, Assam, claiming the lives of at least six individuals and prompting authorities to issue a red alert for the state. The city is grappling with widespread destruction as emergency teams scramble to manage the unfolding crisis.

Among the confirmed fatalities are a mother-daughter pair, Poonam Goswami and Neelakshi Goswami, tragically buried under a cascade of debris in Chapaidong, Kharghuli. In a separate heartbreaking incident in the same locality, five-year-old Ranjita Boro also succumbed to injuries sustained in a landslide.

The city witnessed another fatality in Datalpara, where Deepjyoti Boro lost his life after his home was engulfed by a sudden landslip. The sheer force of the deluge has left a trail of destruction across several key areas including Kamakhya, Kharghuli, Gorchuk, Chandrapur, Bonda, and Noonmati, all reporting significant landslides and structural damage to properties.

In response to the escalating situation, emergency and disaster response teams have been swiftly deployed, working tirelessly on rescue and relief operations. Authorities have issued urgent appeals to residents residing in high-risk zones, urging them to evacuate immediately for their safety. With the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued heavy rainfall, officials are maintaining a vigilant watch over the city’s vulnerable hill slopes and urban drainage systems, striving to mitigate further casualties and prevent more widespread damage. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reinforced its red alert for the region, warning of the potential for more landslides and flash floods in the days ahead, as Guwahati braces for what could be a prolonged period of severe weather.
