Veteran UDP Leader Dr Jemino Mawthoh Resigns, Sparks Meghalaya Political Buzz

Shillong: In a move that has sent tremors through Meghalaya’s political circles, Dr. Jemino Mawthoh, a stalwart of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has tendered his resignation from the party. The seasoned leader, who held pivotal positions within the UDP for over a decade, announced his departure, leaving political observers and party members alike pondering his future trajectory.

While Dr. Mawthoh’s resignation is dated May 20, it was only made public on May 31, igniting a flurry of speculation across the state’s political arena. His exit is particularly significant given his considerable influence as the party’s General Secretary and his long tenure as Working President since 2014, a period during which he played a crucial role in shaping the UDP’s strategies and public image.

In his concise resignation letter addressed to UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh, Dr. Mawthoh attributed his decision to “unavoidable circumstances,” refraining from offering any elaborate explanations. He firmly stated, “This decision is purely personal and I strongly hold my ground on this matter,” underscoring the irreversible nature of his choice.

The veteran politician conveyed his appreciation for the opportunities afforded to him during his long association with the UDP. “I am privileged to serve the party as a Legislator, Working President from 2014 and as General Secretary from 2016 till date. I want to express my sincere thanks for the opportunities that the Party has given me all these years to serve the people of my Constituency and the State,” he penned, reflecting on his journey and contributions.

Dr. Mawthoh’s departure extends beyond his party affiliation. Concurrently with his resignation from the UDP, he has also stepped down from his governmental role as Honorary Adviser to the Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department. This dual exit signals a comprehensive severance from his current political and administrative engagements, raising questions about his next steps in the public sphere.

Maintaining an air of diplomacy, Dr. Mawthoh concluded his resignation letter with well wishes for his former party. “My best wishes to the Party in all its future endeavours,” he wrote, upholding a cordial tone despite his decision to part ways with the organization he served diligently for many years.
