Arunachal: Literary Luminary Lummer Dai Honoured in Pasighat with Grand Statue Unveiling

Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh – The serene town of Pasighat today reverberated with profound reverence as it celebrated the 85th birth anniversary of the legendary literary figure, Late Lummer Dai, with a grand ceremony and the inauguration of his statue. The event, a heartfelt tribute to a man who laid the literary foundation for Arunachal Pradesh, saw the convergence of prominent personalities, underscoring the enduring impact of his work.

The commemorative function was graced by the presence of Shri Ojing Tasing, the Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, and Transport, who highlighted Lummer Dai’s invaluable contributions to the state’s cultural fabric. He was joined by Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, President of the esteemed Assam Sahitya Sabha, adding a significant inter-state literary dimension to the celebration. Also in attendance were Padma Shri awardee and celebrated author Mamang Dai, and State BJP President Shri Kaling Moyong, reflecting the widespread respect and admiration for Lummer Dai’s legacy.

Born on June 1, 1940, in the secluded village of Siluk, Late Lummer Dai is widely regarded as the cornerstone of Arunachal Pradesh’s literary and cultural identity. His path-breaking debut novel, Paharor Xile Xile (1961), penned in Assamese, holds the distinction of being the first novel by an Arunachalee author and is considered a monumental work in the region’s literary annals, paving the way for future generations of writers.

Dai’s literary journey, which commenced during his student days with the publication of his insightful article Aboror Rup Nuguche Kiyo? in the handwritten school magazine Giribani, blossomed over the decades. He evolved into an indelible voice in literature, meticulously using his prose to reflect the unique ethos and collective aspirations of his people, bridging cultural divides through his narratives.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the prestigious Lummer Dai Literary Award, an honour bestowed upon writers and thinkers who have diligently upheld his legacy of intellectual and cultural contribution. This award serves as a testament to the continued inspiration derived from his works and encourages new voices to follow in his footsteps.

Celebrated as a pioneering Assamese writer from Arunachal Pradesh, Lummer Dai’s literary creations continue to be a lasting source of inspiration. His stories transcend regional boundaries, profoundly enriching the broader canvas of Indian literature with their insightful exploration of identity, vision, and poignant social commentary, cementing his place as an immortal literary icon.
