Ranjan Sharma Takes Helm as Assam’s New Election Commissioner
Guwahati: Ranjan Sharma has officially taken charge as the State Election Commissioner of Assam, an official release confirmed, marking a significant transition in the state’s electoral administration. The oath of office was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to Mr. Sharma on June 1, in a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan.
The proceedings of the swearing-in ceremony commenced after Chief Secretary Ravi Kota sought due permission from the Governor, adhering to established protocols. This appointment comes at a crucial time, with the state gearing up for various local body elections in the foreseeable future.
Before his elevation to this pivotal role at the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), Mr. Sharma served as the Special Commissioner and Secretary within the Chief Minister’s Office, where he played a key role in various administrative initiatives. His tenure at the CMO began following his retirement as a decorated Assam Civil Services (ACS) officer, bringing a wealth of experience in public administration to his new assignment.
Mr. Sharma steps into the shoes of Alok Kumar, whose tenure as ASEC Commissioner concluded last month. His extensive background in state administration and his recent experience at the Chief Minister’s Office are expected to provide a strong foundation for overseeing fair and efficient electoral processes across Assam.
