Assam: Balajan Police Station Under Siege Amidst Allegations of Police-Criminal Nexus
Guwahati: Tensions reached boiling point late last night at Balajan police station as a furious mob of locals descended, vehemently protesting what they claim is a shocking entanglement between police and criminal elements.
The protest erupted following the alleged illegal detention of a young man, reportedly snatched from his home in the dead of night by Balajan police officer SI (P) Ridip Ray, purportedly at the behest of a local broker.
A formal complaint has been lodged at the Golokganj police station against SI (P) Ridip Ray and the broker, identified as Azizur Rahman alias Ajju, accusing them of harassment, extortion, and blatant misuse of police authority. Calls are now growing louder for the immediate arrest of Ajju and stringent action against the implicated officer.
Eyewitnesses and the victim’s family recount a chilling sequence of events: broker Ajju allegedly stormed into the home of Mojibur Rahman in Batuatuli village, demanding a hefty sum of ₹1 lakh from a young man with an unblemished record. When his demands were not met, SI Ridip Ray reportedly joined forces with Ajju, detaining Mojibur Rahman and his brother Azibar Rahman without any semblance of due process, transporting them to the police station. Locals have unequivocally labelled this act as an abduction carried out under the guise of legal authority.
Crucially, the police are alleged to have flagrantly overstepped their jurisdictional boundaries, operating within the Golokganj police station area without filing any case or issuing a legal notice, thereby raising grave concerns about procedural violations.
The enraged villagers besieged Balajan police station, demanding immediate accountability and openly questioning the alleged “goonda raj” operating under the police uniform. “Are these police or goons?” shouted one resident, articulating the collective outrage of the gathered crowd.
Local residents assert that broker Ajju has been terrorising the region with impunity for an extended period, allegedly benefiting from his close ties with law enforcement. Community members are now urgently appealing to the Dhubri Superintendent of Police to initiate swift and impartial action.
As the First Information Report gains traction, pressure is mounting on district authorities to act decisively. Civil society groups and human rights activists have also begun closely monitoring the case, issuing a stern warning that any failure to address the alleged police-criminal collusion could severely erode public trust in law enforcement agencies.
