Curfew Imposed in Manipur Districts Amid Violent Protests
Imphal: Authorities have clamped prohibitory orders in five valley districts of Manipur, including a total curfew in Bishnupur district, following violent protests over the alleged arrest of a leader of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol. The protesters demanded the leader’s release, torching tyres and old furniture in the middle of the road in Kwakeithel and Uripok.
The situation remained tense on Sunday morning, with enhanced security deployment along the roads leading to the Raj Bhavan. Additional personnel from the central forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.
In Imphal West district, the district magistrate has banned the assembly of five or more people and the carrying of sticks, stones, firearms, or sharp weapons under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). In Imphal East district, people have been prohibited from stepping outside their residences from 10 pm on June 10 until further orders.
Protesters clashed with security forces on Saturday night, torching a bus at Khurai Lamlong in Imphal East district. Gunshots were heard in Kwakeithel, but the source could not be ascertained. The protesters also gheraoed the Imphal airport gate, sleeping in the middle of the road to prevent any possible attempt to take the arrested leader outside the state.
Members of Arambai Tenggol staged symbolic protests, pouring petrol over themselves in a show of solidarity with their leader. The situation remains volatile, with authorities working to restore peace and order in the region.
