Sikkim’s Mangan District Ensures Food Security Ahead of Monsoon
Gangtok: The Food & Civil Supplies Department of Sikkim’s Mangan district has taken proactive measures to ensure food security for high-altitude and remote areas by initiating the advance distribution of rice to beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Lachen.
In line with a directive from the Ministry of Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, the department has lifted and distributed a three-month advance allocation of rice. A dedicated team of five officials, led by Palden N. Lachungpa, District Civil Supplies Officer, braved challenging terrain and weather conditions to reach Lachen village.
The team is working closely with local leaders to ensure a smooth and equitable distribution of rice to every household under the PDS network. A total of 553 quintals of rice has been stocked at the Lachen Food Godown, which is critical in view of the seasonal roadblocks and transportation challenges experienced during Sikkim’s monsoon months.
The District Civil Supplies Officer has confirmed that the team will oversee the distribution process to ensure that no beneficiary is left out and that the rice reaches the intended recipients well before logistical bottlenecks set in. This initiative is a vital component of the state’s monsoon preparedness efforts, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for all.
